Ingredients
- ½ ounce absinthe
- 1.5 ounces gin
- 1.5 ounces orange liqueur, such as Cointreau
- 1.5 ounces fortified red wine, such as Lillet Rouge or Cocchi Rosa
- 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
- 1 ounce fresh blood orange juice, plus 2 thin slices
- Roughly cracked or small ice cubes
Equipment
- 2 cocktail glasses
Instructions
- Into each of two chilled coupe or cocktail glasses, pour ¼ ounce of absinthe. Swirl to rinse the glasses, making sure to tilt them to reach the lip of the glass. Discard the excess and set the glasses aside (see Cook's Note).
- Fill a cocktail shaker with the gin, orange liqueur, fortified red wine, lemon juice, and blood orange juice. Fill it halfway with ice, cover, and shake to chill, about 30 seconds. Strain and divide the mixture between two glasses. Garnish each glass with a blood orange wheel and serve at once.
Cook's Notes
Rinsing a glass with a spirit is a technique used to impart flavor and aroma without overwhelming the other ingredients in a cocktail. In this instance, absinthe is used to leave a lingering anise scent that is complementary to the bright, citrusy cocktail but not overpowering.
